Richard M Stallman and OLPC

February 9, 2008

Richard M Stallman

Couple of days back, in Kathmandu, CAN Infotech 2008, an IT related tech show was held. There was a stall by OLPC Nepal. OLPC stands for One Laptop Per Child project whose main motto is the transformation of education by providing all the children around the world with low cost, high efficient laptop. These laptops are basically estimated to be used at $100 and usually projected as Green Colored Laptop. The project driven by equal opportunity and equal education to all the children around the world is mainly focused towards the children in underdeveloped and developing countries. OLPC Nepal is just the regional part of this project and some folks from OLPC Nepal managed to take a short Interview with Richard M Stallman aka RMS in India.

The Founder of the GNU project and President of free Software foundation, RMS was there in India on his advocacy tour. Upon one question asked on OLPC, RMS strongly supported the project. To hear his answer, please click the following play button.

Stallman went on to say that the OLPC laptop has given people a way to use the free BIOS. Lack of a widely available free BIOS has remained a major issue in the free software community. Stallman has always stressed for the need to use free softwares in educational institutes. The OLPC project has only made him happier.

He is, however dissatisfied with the wireless networking system used in the XO. Since it uses a proprietary technology, he plans to remove it and use a separate device when he needs to make wireless communication with others.
