Minister for Information and Communications Krishna Bahadur Mahara stressed on the importance of IT for economic development during the inauguration of the 14th CAN InfoTech, Tuesday.

Information Technology enables free flow of information and in turn helps erase geographical borders enabling us to reach out to people across the globe in a matter of minutes since exchange of information is extremely important for development. The IT industry is therefore the essence for the establishment of a knowledge based society and economic development. By the year 2020 every citizen should own a cellular phone and every household should own at least one computer”, he said.

According to the organisers ,
CAN InfoTech” is an annual IT trade show and ICT conference is being organised by CAN for the past 13 years. It provides an exclusive forum for the latest technological display, creates awareness about IT applications, promotes IT as well as acclimatises Nepalese IT professionals and enthusiasts with the evolving breakthroughs in Global IT realm.” Approximately 300,000 people are expected to visit the fair which is known as the largest IT exhibition in Nepal, with over 200 stalls for display and sale of IT equipment and accessories.

Along with the fair a two day ICT fair will also be held during the fair in which IT experts from Nepal, CAN USA and CAN Japan will present papers that would discuss the importance of ICT and how to expand it in the sectors of health, education and agriculture.

The conference will provide us a platform in which we can learn about the practical use of ICT like how it could be used to provide better health and education facilities. In order to provide better and affordable public health and education services in rural areas of Nepal,” said Computer Association of Nepal’s ICT chief Pankaj Jalan.

CAN president, Biplav Man Singh stated that CAN is working to develop a knowledge based society in which everyone has access to education.

ICT is essential for economic development, which in this age is not possible without free flow of information,” he said.

He further stressed that because Nepal is a landlocked country it is very difficult for us to trade directly with countries across Asia and the world, the promotion of ICT can enable direct selling in other words e-marketing.

E-marketing can also be used to sell our tourist destinations,” he said.

He also said that CAN was working to fulfil vision 2020, which is the key to economic development in the nation.

Meanwhile Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala sent a note wishing for the success of the CAN InfoTech congratulated it for its effort in promoting ICT across Nepal.

The work CAN has done is praiseworthy because it has helped in the development of IT nation wide which is very important for development activities nation-wide,” he said.

The Fair will take place up to February 2nd and tickets for the exhibition are available at the venue.
